9 Oct 1980 John Hinckley arrested in Nashville TN for attempting to bring three handguns onto an airliner. Fined $62.50 plus confiscation of the handguns. President Jimmy Carter was in Nashville at this moment.
29 Mar 1981 Writes a love letter to Miss Jodie Foster.
30 Mar 1981 John W. Hinckley, Jr. fires several shots from a .22 at Ronald Reagan, striking him once under the left armpit. He also critically injures press secretary James Brady, and injures Secret Service Agent Timothy J. McCarthy and Washington DC Police Officer Thomas K. Delahanty. A copy of Catcher in the Rye was found in Hinckley's hotel room.
31 Mar 1981 Dinner engagement between John Hinckley's brother, Scott Hinckley, and Neil Bush, cancelled after the assassination attempt. Note that George HW Bush is Vice President at this time, and would become President if the attempt were successful.
27 May 1981 John W. Hinckley attempts suicide with a Tylenol overdose, fails.
Aug 1981 Indicted for the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan.
21 Jun 1982 A jury finds Hinckley not guilty by reason of insanity.
18 Dec 1990 Stephen Sondheim's new musical, "Assassins", opens at the Playwrights Horizons theatre. The show, a musical from the point of view of several assassins and the presidents they kill, includes a John Hinckley character. Show highlight: "Unworthy of Your Love", sung as a duet with John Hinckley and Lynne "Squeaky" Fromme.
1999 Hinckley is allowed supervised visits outside of the hospital. All of such visits are shadowed by the Secret Service.
Apr 2000 Hinckley wins the rights to unsupervised furloughs.
May 2000 Hinckley's rights to unsupervised furloughs are revoked when guards find a book about Jodie Foster in his room.
17 Dec 2003 U.S. District Judge Paul L. Friedman grants Hinckley unsupervised visits with his parents John and Jo Ann.
